June Gloom

Meiko, Hotel Café in Hollywood, tonight, June 3rd
Brandi Carlisle, The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, June 4th
Little Joy, Troubadour in West Hollywood, Friday June 5th

The jacarandas in Hollywood are shedding everywhere. On my drive to work through East Hollywood on into K-Town, every fifth car is covered in the fallen purple blossoms. It looks really nice, but I know it’s a pain to clean up, and they rot quickly and smell terrible. Ah, c’est la vie, I guess. Beautiful things sometimes sour… quickly. Depressing.

Sorry, what can I say. June Gloom is in full swing here in the Southland. And three of my favorite grey day bands are playing in as many nights, starting TONIGHT.

Meiko’s playing the Hotel Café tonight. A few choice uses by high-powered music supervisors in the TV and Film world, and this songstress became one of my favorites. Take a page from their books, and use her self-titled album to create your own background soundtrack while you cook your girl a nice meal.

Brandi Carlile (always have to remind myself how to spell that one right) is playing The Broad Stage in Santa Monica Thursday night, June 4th. Alternatively gloomy, brooding and rocking, her music can pick me up or drive me down on different days. She’s been a staple album in my annual office Christmas White Elephant gift of 24 burned albums in a case. One of my best friends and I used to have “Brandi Breaks” in our office on long work days. She recently got married and had her dance to this acoustic version of The Story. I’m anxiously awaiting new stuff. Do you hear me, Carlile? What gives?

Little Joy is just cool. If you need to relax, start playing their retro-pop self-titled debut. It released on Election Day last year, but I was so concerned with getting an Obama for my birthday, I must have missed it until only recently. Little Joy plays uber-cool ubiquitous West Hollywood spot, The Troubadour this Friday, June 5th.

Meiko – “Said and Done”
Brandi Carlile – “The Story” (Acoustic)
Little Joy – “The Next Time Around”
