The Islands

Every now and then I suspect I might have superhero powers. I melted a hard drive the other day just by touching it. I lost all of my data. I think there are some X-Men that have this problem, no? I don’t know, could be a coincidence. It was for this reason that I found myself hunting online to replace an mp3 by a band named Islands.

What started out as a recon mission ended up as a treasure hunt. Unfortunately for me, there were no pirates (of the sailing variety) on this adventure for treasure, but I did encounter Unicorns (of the band variety). Butter Team informed me of most of this. You should really just go read it there. The Unicorns were made up of three dudes who went by a host of stage names. They were like fucking bank robbers with all of their aliases. And they sang songs about ghosts and death and other awesome topics. Their beats sound like the zombies are coming back in style. Their vocals sound like what you’d hear if you were running away from the said zombies in a slow motion movie. They made all of this music and then decided they’d break up.

Which is cool because two of the guys decided they’d stick together and form Islands (which is a bad ass rock band) and do some hip-hop (Th’ Corn Gangg) as well because you know, if you’re King Midas, you touch as much stuff as you can, right?
The Islands song Creeper saved my life. Not exactly, but pretty much. After hearing this song I decided I’ll never have a darkroom in my house for the following reasons:

1. I never develop film.
2. I would never live with someone who did because I wouldn’t want a darkroom in my house. This is why I don’t date photography chicks.
3. Have you seen the movie Saw? Holy fuck. Or any scary movie? A room that is essentially dark is just too inviting for intruders.
4. Have you seen that crazy Joshua Jackson movie that takes place in Asia? Horrible things happen to him in the darkroom.
5. This song’s lyrics.

This song reaffirms every instinct I’ve ever had about the possibility of living within two fucking miles of a darkroom* and always makes me terrified to come home. But true to form, the Islands pick up right where the Unicorns left off. Getting stabbed in the heart. By a guy waiting in a dark room. I don’t know if it’s a photo style darkroom but it’s definitely a dark room. And that’s enough for me. I have a new “current” favorite song every minute. But it just jumped from Creeper to the Unicorns’ Tuff Ghost.

These guys are pretty rad.**

Islands – “Creeper”
Unicorns – “Tuff Ghost”

* Hyperbole.
** Yeah.
