The Metric System

Or, perhaps, even more accurate, shame on me.

I haven’t written a post in a month! I could give excuses about how I’ve been hard at work, slaving away as Assistant Director on an amazing play co-produced by Furious Theatre Company and the Theatre @ Boston Court currently running in Pasadena… but I won’t. I’ll just say that things have been hectic.

So hectic in fact, Monday nights have been my only nights off this summer. So I, along with a few of my friends from work, decided to begin a new Monday tradition of kicking back a few brews at a quaint little Irish Pub on Magnolia & Pass called “Snug”. This is not a plug, this is not a “happening” place whatsoever, and, actually, I’d like to keep it that way.

So this past Monday, as I’m ordering my second Paulaner Hefe, the state-of-the-art jukebox that charges $.50 a song began to play Metric’s “Help, I’m Alive.” The bartender said, handing me a lemon wedge, “Oh, I love this song. Do you know who this is?” I, being the not-so-state-of-the-art human jukebox said, “You don’t know Metric?!”

And it hit me that we haven’t posted about the wonderfully harmonic alt-rock band Metric yet. They are enjoying breakout success with that song and a couple others. Some airtime on KROQ and (apparently) local valley bars. I love their sound. I would compare them to Broken Social Scene and Stars… except they’re basically the same people, so that would be redundant (Emily Haines and Jason Shaw are also in B.S.S. And Haines lends vocals to Stars, among others. Although, Metric actually precedes both those entities).

The aforementioned song is at times haunting and up-lifting, a cool juxtaposition that stays with you. The title alone echoes what I think a lot of people are feeling these days… The album Fantasies is out now and making waves.

Metric – “Help, I’m Alive”
Metric – “Help, I’m Alive” (The Twelves Remix)
Stars – “Sleep Tonight” (Junior Boys Remix)

Jeez, listen to you, “What, you don’t know Metric?!” Snob. Or maybe I’m just upset because I don’t know Metric. Also, her voice sounds kinda like Inara George. No wonder you like them!
