Celebration

Athens, Georgia just fucking cranks out a disproportionate amount of amazing musical acts. Athens, GA and Champaign, Illinois are like the UK of America (read: really small places that illogically pump out talent). You should know I’m holed up in a Marriott located in Arlington, Virginia at the moment for a solid 14 day stretch. If you ever want to test your love for life you should try to do the same. 18 minutes in this hotel and you’ll start to question your own motivation to survive. I swear to you. Point being, Arlington is close enough to Maryland that Baltimore acts have piqued my interest. That is, when I’m trying not to figure out how to find the bottom of the Potomac.

Mind you the only things that keep me going are: hot chicks (thank you Georgetown!), thoughts of seeing your mom again, and of course the fact that I get about 200 megabytes of ear-thumping/popping music every morning in my electronic mail inbox. For the most part I keep it insanely organized and know about every track in my library. Every now and then though, I think elves sneak some mystery stuff into my playlist*. Tonight as I was trying to drown my depression in a cup full of PatrĂ³n made of silver, I came across this track by a band called “Celebration”. Here’s my question. When are band names going to catch up with google? Have you tried to google celebration? I mean, I’m wicked sweet with google so of course I found the band info. But if you’re a noob – good fucking luck. There are like 800 bands out there if you google “Celebration music”.

Getting to the point. I found a rocking interview with the lead singer who was asked if it’s important for bands to have a “web presence.”

Direct quote from Baltimore Magazine in 2005 – Ford:

“I don’t know. It’s a given now. I think that question would have been relevant five years ago. Everyone is online now, even funeral homes for God’s sake.”

Even Funeral Homes. I love her. This song has been on repeat for a solid two hours. And it’s keeping me from testing if these windows on the 7th floor actually open up or not (they don’t). Her voice makes me feel like I’m listening to a more accessible Beach House (also from Baltimore). All right, that’s only two bands. But they’re tipping the scales on musical weight at the moment and Jesus Christ I should drink more and stop talking. Shhhhh, just listen! They are playing a show at the Black Cat in DC on September 1st. Please go for me as I’ll be in LA. Check their myspace for details.**

Celebration – “Evergreen”

**Don’t forget myspace sucks, but sometimes that is all there is. Kind of like ramen in that regard.

if you’re looking for more Baltimore to tip the scales, check out Wye Oak, Caverns, Double Dagger, Dan Deacon, etc., plus, ya know, Frank Zappa, Billie Holiday, Ric Ocasek…
