SPOILER ALERT: there’s a new Hood Internet mixtape out. What this spoils for you is hearing the original songs in their original state, pre-mashup. This is more important than you may realize, cos it happened to me: I heard the Grey Album before either the White or Black* albums. It didn’t ruin either album for me later on, of course, but I can’t take vocals on Beatles Rock Band else I start rapping Jay-Z. The mixtape is solid, though. I used to rag on Hood Internet as the poor man’s Girl Talk, but I don’t think that’s fair anymore. When you rock out to GT, you’re slightly embarrassed because you recognize every single song fragment. When you rock out to THI, you’re slightly embarrassed because you’ve never heard of 90% of the artists cut up for material.
‘Course, that makes it great for discovering new artists. I more than likely wouldn’t have listened to Drake ever ever ever if he hadn’t been mixed in with The Rapture, who I like just fine. VEGA and Amanda Blank are both totally new to me, and hot damn, they sound great together and I’m going to have to look into them both. There’s all sorts of little surprises peppered throughout. Here’s what you do: download it for free, legally, no foolin’, put it on your Zune or whatever and go jogging, and let it all seep into your brain bit by bit.
UPDATE: so sometimes THI improves on the originals by using them as mere ingredients in their hipster strudel. I looked up the Drake video they used as source material, and it’s basically slow-motion closeups of bouncing breasts, which on reflection it is totally fine with me. The Amanda Blank original is really promising. Too soon to tell, plus I’ve only heard the one song, but she might become the next Peaches. Think it’s far-fetched? She was opening for Peaches in NYC this past weekend. I came this close to going, but I was already much, much too drunk.

The Hood Internet – Drake v. the Rapture
* By the way, did any of us believe for an instant that Jay was retiring in 2003? Yeah right. Get real.

Paul A. Gibson added these pithy words on Nov 18 09 at 12:12 pmOh snap, really? I was trying to figure out who VEGA was, but Google was only turning up smooth jazz and shit. I love Neon Indian. I’ll have to post ‘I should have done acid with you.’
T.S. Franke added these pithy words on Jan 29 10 at 9:46 amPaul, I should’ve been following this site since it started. This format is great, ad-free is ever better, and the site design is clean and smooth. Built on wordpress I take it?
Anyways, thank you for showing me The Hood Internet. I had listened to Girl Talk far too much, and needed something fresh, but similar.
Paul A. Gibson added these pithy words on Jan 29 10 at 10:18 amThanks! It’s Wordpress. They won’t let me put up ads since we already installed a spyware program that steals people’s bank data whenever they post a comment. It’s pretty unobtrusive, and really lucrative!
