Sometimes (as previously stated) a soundtrack to a movie becomes a character, stands out on it’s own, or even overtakes the movie in importance. With Spike Jonze in the captain’s seat and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s frontwoman Karen O at the musical steering wheel, I expected “Where The Wild Things Are” to produce a soundtrack of this nature. I expected the score to grow into a big mythical furry beast of it own. I expected… too much.
In a disappointing turn, this soundtrack seems to be lacking something, which, in the best case scenario, would be the movie. Perhaps these tracks will help unfold the visual story of the film in ways yet unseen, falling into place like the final piece of the cinematic puzzle. I guess a big part of me just wanted it to stand on its own.
We’ll know soon enough, it’s not like I won’t be going to the movie because of this little let down. It just means I won’t be burning a copy of the original motion picture soundtrack for my car.
Now if the movie manages to change my opinion of the music retroactively, that’d be interesting.
But I heavily doubt it.
