Diamond Watch Wrists

You’d think with a name like Diamond Watch Wrists it’d be a flashy-ass glam rap record. No sir, and I’ll thank you not to stereotype. This one totally slipped through my proverbial crack until it came up on my shuffle on a train ride, and I spent the next eight hours listening to it pretty much non-stop. It’s so good. I don’t care what Pitchfork says, it’s so fucking good. So breathy and glacial and layered and gorgeous, like Bjork with five heads. It all sounds kind of samey, but the thing is that it’s all good, so it’s hard to mind. Just good from start to finish. You can see how I’m fishing for words here, but that’s how this blogging thing goes at times. Sometimes it’s just about sharing music and filling up the white box between with picture and the clickable tunes with black scratches.

I’ll tell you, I would have gotten to this much sooner if it hadn’t been called Diamond Watch Wrists. It’s actually Scott Herren, better known as Prefuse 73. I mentioned Prefuse 73 earlier, briefly, and if that doesn’t ring a bell I’ll tell you it’s genre-proof glitched-out instrumental electro-hip-hop. See how hard it was to describe? Now this guy goes out and releases records under a half-dozen different aliases. At least when Kool Keith and Doom do that they have the good sense to publicize the shift in persona. If you just up and change your name it’s like you’re trying to hide your new music from your adoring fans. Let us common people know what’s up, and slap a sticker on it that says “From the guy who brought you Hideyaface and that awesome The Books remix album from a couple years back.”

Thus concludes the Too Much Happiness marketing seminar.
